Common Forms of Workplace Discrimination

Discrimination based on race, gender, age, disability, or religion

Washington and federal laws protect workers from unfair treatment related to their identity, background, or beliefs.

Retaliation after reporting misconduct

If your employer took action against you for reporting harassment, discrimination, or illegal behavior, they may be liable.

Wrongful termination

Being fired without cause—or due to your identity, disability status, or protected complaints—may qualify as unlawful. In some cases, we may also help you pursue or negotiate a severance agreement as part of an EEOC claim or settlement.

Failure to accommodate medical or religious needs

Employers are required to provide reasonable accommodations for health conditions, disabilities, and sincerely held religious practices.

What You May Be Entitled To

An employment law claim is not just about holding your employer accountable. It is about protecting your career, your finances, and your peace of mind. If your rights have been violated, you may be eligible for:

  • Reinstatement or promotion
If you were demoted, denied advancement, or let go unfairly.

  • Lost wages or back pay
Compensation for income you missed due to retaliation or discrimination.

  • Emotional distress damages
For the psychological impact of being targeted, silenced, or punished.

  • Policy reform or workplace training
In cases where broader changes are needed to prevent future harm.

We know that bringing a claim against your employer is not easy. Our team approaches these cases with empathy, precision, and respect. When you contact Beverly Grant Law Firm, P.S., you will receive straightforward answers and a legal strategy focused on your priorities. Beverly’s experience as a judge adds a valuable perspective—she understands how both sides of a workplace dispute are evaluated and resolved.

You will never be treated like a case number. You will be treated like a person—with rights, goals, and the power to speak up.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What laws protect me from discrimination at work?

Washington’s Law Against Discrimination (WLAD), R.C.W. 49.60 et al., and federal laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act offer broad protections. We can explain how these apply to your situation.

  • Do I need to report the discrimination to HR first?

First and foremost, follow procedures set in the handbook.  If none, contact an attorney as soon as possible. However, you can still speak with an attorney before or after doing so.

  • Can I still file a claim if I quit my job?

Yes. Quitting does not prevent you from filing a claim, especially if your resignation was due to a hostile or unsafe work environment.

  • How long do I have to file a workplace discrimination claim?

Immediately when the incident occurs and be prepared to give a statement with the four W’s (who, what, where, when) and the one H (how).  Time limits vary depending on the type of claim and the agency involved. Some may be as short as 180 days.

Contacting a lawyer promptly is important. There may also be additional deadlines under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, so be sure to contact an attorney to discuss.

  • Will my case be public?

We handle every case with discretion. While some legal actions become part of the public record, we will work with you to manage confidentiality as much as possible.  If a lawsuit is filed, the case will be public.
