Founder & Principal Attorney
Beverly Grant Johnson, Owner of Beverly Grant Law Firm PS, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers and Marquis Who’s Who in the World for her dedication, achievements, and leadership in legal services. She became a member of Lawyers of Distinction in 2023.
With over 45 years of experience to her credit, Ms. Grant has established a successful career in legal services, focusing on personal injury and specializing in helping workers with their employment issues(e.g. discrimination, wrongful termination, severance agreements, etc.).
Her experience includes serving as a Pierce County Superior Court judge from 2003 to 2013, attorney and partner with her former husband at Grant & Grant Law Offices from 1997 to 2003. While practicing in California, she received case referrals from Johnnie Cochran and Robert Kardashian. She has excelled as the owner of her own law firms under. Beverly Grant Law Firm & Associates (1992-1997, Los Angeles, CA. and Tacoma, WA. as Beverly Johnson Law Firm (1983-1997). Earlier in her career, Ms. Grant served as general counsel at Davies Pearson et al from 1988 to 1992, and as an attorney at McGavick, Burgess Law Firm from 1980 to 1983. She also clerked for a federal judge from 1978 to 1980. Additionally, she served as a board member for the Lenny Wilkens Foundation, which funds organizations that help young people reach their full potential while honoring their dignity and self-respect, regardless of circumstances; the American Red Cross; SOAR Academy, a charter school; Hilltop Artists founded by Dale Chihuly and as vice president of a ski club.
Laying a solid educational foundation, Ms. Grant earned a Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts from the University of Washington in 1973, a Juris Doctor from the University of Washington School of Law in 1976 and nearly completed a masters degree in judicial studies from the University of Nevada at Reno. She has served as a lecturer for various state and national bar associations (past board member of WSTLA, ATLA, NELA and WELA) and has published articles with the same including 33Am Jur Trials at pp253. Her career is marked by historic achievements, including being the first African American female superior court judge in Pierce County and the first African American Daffodil Princess. Inspired by her father’s role as a director during an anti-poverty program, she decided in seventh grade to pursue a legal career, motivated by the independence and pride of those seeking legal assistance rather than handouts.
Reflecting on her path, Ms. Grant notes an early case where she represented a woman pressured to compromise her integrity to advance in her job, which sparked her passion for addressing sexual harassment cases. At a time when sexual harassment was not legally recognized as sex discrimination, she advocated for its recognition, working on cases based on common law and precedents. Another notable case involved defending a man wrongfully terminated for filing a worker’s compensation claim, at a time where there were no statutes addressing this issue. Her efforts contributed to later legislative changes to prevent such injustices. She attributes her success to her unwavering passion for the law, dedication to helping others, and a commitment to giving back to her community. She emphasizes humility as a guiding principle, acknowledging that success is not achieved in isolation and that remaining grounded is essential for navigating personal and professional challenges.
